The iconic Simple Minds made a much anticipated first appearance at Halifax’s stunning Piece Hall, and what a night it was. But before I tell you about their set, I need to talk about the support act, none other than the magnificently talented KT Tunstall. Her set was the perfect blend of newer material and classic older songs. From the rocking opener “Private Eyes” KT had the audience in her hands, we sang, clapped, danced and bounced on her instruction. KT has amazing energy and an abundance of charm. In a set full of highlights “Black Horse And The Cherry Tree” and “Suddenly I See” were stratospheric highlights. Andy Burrows of Razorlight is KT’s drummer and they played a great version of that bands UK number one, “America” mashed up with KT’s “Other Side Of The World”. Her vast musical prowess was on display including some excellent percussive looping. KT Tunstall is a true mega talent, and she proved that beyond a doubt with this set.

Finally, it was time for one of the most iconic Scottish bands, Simple Minds and with the historic backdrop of the 18th-century Georgian square that is the Piece Hall, the band delivered a spectacular performance, showcasing their enduring legacy. Right from the first few bars of "Waterfront", it was clear that this was going to be a high-energy evening. The opener set the tone for a performance that never let up once. Lead singer Jim Kerr leads the charge like the musical general that he is. His voice, as powerful as ever, reverberated across the square, effortlessly hitting those soaring high notes that have defined many of Simple Minds' biggest hits.

The band's lineup is still a well-oiled machine, with Kerr joined by longtime guitarist Charlie Burchill and co-founder of the band back in 1977. Burchill’s riff-heavy guitar work was on full display, particularly during the iconic "Don't You (Forget About Me)," which still sends chills down the spine of fans worldwide whether they are hardcore Simple Minds fans or not. The synergy between Kerr and Burchill is still strong, with their chemistry bringing new life to these familiar tracks

There was a nice balance between their classic hits and newer material, a testament to the band's ability to evolve while staying true to their roots. "Promised You a Miracle" sent everyone into a nostalgic frenzy, including me. It was a perfect blend of energy and emotion, as fans were treated to not just a concert, but a journey through the band's musical history. The rhythm section, consisting of Ged Grimes on bass and Cherisse Osei on drums, provided a solid backbone to the performance. Osei’s drumming was perfect throughout the night and came into its own during her thumping drum solo during “Theme For Great Cities”. As the night eventually drew to a close, Simple Minds left the stage to a rapturous applause, only to return for an encore that included "Book Of Brilliant Things" which was given a gospel inspired soul vocal by uber talented backing vocalist Sarah Brown. The crowd was on their feet, screaming for more, and the band delivered with a volcanic take on “Alive And Kicking”

This gig was a triumphant celebration of Simple Minds incredible career. With Jim Kerr’s impassioned and performance, Charlie Burchill’s masterful guitar playing, and the rest of the band’s stellar contributions, the night proved that they are still at the top of their game. Personally, I had hoped to hear “Belfast Child”, but its omission took nothing away from an almost perfect set. For fans, it was an unforgettable experience, a chance to relive some of the greatest anthems of the '80s and ‘90s while seeing the continued brilliance of one of rock's most enduring acts. As a footnote I want to give a huge shout out to the lady providing sign language interpretations on the night, even Jim Kerr gave her a positive shout!
