The house music stops and the night is kicked off with an intro video packed with familiar faces — Scott Mills, Brian May, Olly Murs and Gemma Atkinson among them — all praising the group and celebrating their return. You’d expect the band to burst onto the stage straight after, but instead the Hydro crowd are treated to… an advert for Grana Padano cheese. Random? Absolutely. Memorable? Definitely.
When the lights finally drop for real, the group launch into “Slam Dunk (Da Funk)”, and the screams are loud enough to drown them out. It’s the explosive start you’d hope for, with “Got the Feelin’” landing as one of the early highlights as well. Looking around the venue, you can see everyone is happy to see all the boys back.
At times the show feels like it’s missing just a little extra spark to elevate the atmosphere fully; the crowd are with them, but the pacing occasionally softens the momentum. Still, the group’s enthusiasm keeps things fun and engaging from song to song.
One moment that does kick everything up a gear is the brilliant intro to “Lay All Your Lovin’ on Me”, prefaced by the group shouting, “Glasgow, we know you like to rock!” The track is mashed with chunks of Linkin Park’s “One Step Closer” and AC/DC’s “Back in Black”, a combination that works along with their lyrics on top.
Nostalgia runs thick with staples like “When the Lights Go Out”, while their cover of Queen’s “We Will Rock You” is made for an arena crowd stamping and clapping along.
We get more hits in “Rock the Party”, “Until the Time Is Through” and fan-favourite “Everybody Get Up” - all of which dial the volume up each time.
After a brief exit, the encore brings a lively medley of “Jump Around / Place Your Hands / Get Lucky”, before the band close the night with the hit everyone comes to hear — “Keep On Movin’”, wrapping up a feel-good, nostalgia-packed set.
FIVE’s return to Glasgow may not reinvent the boyband formula, but it offers exactly what fans hope for: fun, familiar hits, and the joy of a group who are clearly delighted to be back doing it together!
