The Hydro was buzzing with anticipation long before Benson Boone appeared, but the night began with something altogether different — a taste of the past, filtered through a millennial lens. Elliot James Reay, often described as a modern answer to Elvis Presley, took the stage and instantly transported the Glasgow crowd to another era. With his slicked-back hair, polished shoes, and effortless charisma, Reay’s performance carried the charm of the 1950s and 60s rock’n’roll icons he so clearly admires.

There’s a genuine sincerity to his approach — no irony, no parody, just respect for the golden age of pop delivered through a fresh and youthful energy. His voice carries the softness and melodic grace of Ricky Nelson, yet with the richness and depth reminiscent of Paul Anka and Elvis himself. In a music scene where production often overwhelms emotion, his clean lyrics and unforced delivery felt refreshing.

Highlights of Reay’s set included the tender, nostalgic Sweetness and the dreamy Daydreaming, both original songs that shimmered with warmth and sincerity. Then came his remarkable rendition of Unchained Melody, a nod to Elvis that brought a hush over the Hydro. His take on the classic wasn’t an imitation but a heartfelt tribute — smooth, soulful, and entirely his own. If tonight is any indication, Elliot James Reay has a bright future ahead, and one can only hope he continues to surprise audiences with more unexpected covers and original material in the years to come.

After a brief interlude, the lights dimmed, the screens flickered to life, and the crowd erupted as Benson Boone’s cinematic opening video rolled. At just 23, Boone has become one of pop’s fastest-rising stars, dominating social media and streaming charts with an ease that has made some critics wonder if his ascent has been too fast. I’ll admit, I arrived a casual listener — familiar with a few of his hits, but sceptical of the hype. By the end of the night, though, I understood it completely.

Boone appeared in a sparkling disco-style jumpsuit, a hint of his toned chest peeking through to the delight of the audience. He bounded across the stage with youthful energy, flipping, twirling, and commanding the vast Hydro like a seasoned showman. The opening stretch — I Wanna Be the One You Call, Sorry I’m Here for Someone Else, and Man in Me — set an exhilarating tone, showcasing his mix of theatricality and emotional sincerity.

After a high-energy first act, Boone shifted gears for the night’s most spectacular moment: during Mystical Magical, Boone literally rose into the air on an oversized chandelier, floating above the audience as he sang. It was part fantasy, part Broadway spectacle — absurd and dazzling in equal measure.

That theatrical flourish gave way to a sequence of fan favourites: Pretty Slowly, In the Stars, and a tender Take Me Home. Each showcased Boone’s surprisingly strong vocal control, even as he later revealed he’d been battling illness.

For the third section of the night, he re-emerged in a Western-inspired cowboy outfit, trading sequins for denim but keeping the charm intact. The run of Young American Heart, Mr Electric Blue, Momma Song, and Love of Mine brought warmth and intimacy to the vast arena. Before Reminds Me of You, Boone launched into a lengthy comedic skit involving a Scottish couple meeting at school — an amusing bit that started strong but overstayed its welcome. By the ten-minute mark, the crowd’s attention had waned slightly, though the laughter was good-natured.

He made up for it instantly with a breath-taking finale: Beautiful Things. The lighting burst into gold, and Boone poured every ounce of remaining energy into the final chorus. It was an epic, cinematic finish that left no doubt he’s more than a viral sensation — he’s a full-fledged performer.

Despite fighting illness, Boone refused to cancel the show, a decision that earned respect from fans and critics alike. His vocals may have strained in moments, but his determination and connection with the audience never faltered.

By the time the lights came up, I realised I’d entered the arena a cautious observer and left a genuine fan. Benson Boone didn’t just live up to the hype — he exceeded it, proving he’s carving his own distinctive path in pop music. With support from Elliot James Reay’s timeless charm, this Hydro show was an unforgettable blend of nostalgia and modern star power, and one that Glasgow won’t soon forget.
