Villanelle // Hinge

A grungy debut delivers shot of adrenaline

★★★☆☆ (3/5)

Much hyped indie rockers Villanelle emerge with their debut single “Hinge”. Since their formation, the band have been hard at work touring, including supporting on Liam Gallagher’s Definitely Maybe 30th Anniversary Tour. Now the band begin the process of translating their energetic live sound into equally explosive live recordings.

The track thunders through its two minute and forty seconds run time, maintaining its high energy. From the opening bass riff, a heavy Nirvana influence can be felt. This simple yet powerful rhythm provides a solid foundation for the tight drums and a punky snarl from the vocals. A grunge-infused guitar solo steps through the melody and into the outro where the band let loose.

Hinge looks to be a mission statement for a new era of villanelle. Leading up to the band releasing an EP which will strengthen their live set in preparation for their upcoming “Magical Mallards Migrating” tour which is set to cross the U.K. in December 2025.
